Kollock, Shepard Kosciusko

Shepard Kosciusko Kollock (1795-1865) was born in Elizabethtown, NJ, the son of Shepard Kollock, an officer in the Revolutionary War. He graduated with honors from the College of New Jersey (Princeton), then studied theology with his brother-in-law John McDowell and with his brother Henry Kollock of Savannah, GA. Shepard Kollock was a minister for a Presbyterian church in Oxford, NC, prior to joining the faculty as professor of rhetoric and logic in 1819. After leaving the University in 1825, he served congregations in Virginia and New Jersey. As his health began to decline in 1860, he "accepted light work in connection with a charitable institution in Philadelphia" (Battle 1:254). He was twice married, first to Sarah Blount Littlejohn and subsequently to Sarah Harris. Sarah Kollock, a daughter from the first marriage, was one of the teachers of a prominent female academy in Hillsborough, NC (Battle 1:254).
